Tiny midwestern city offering $9,500 for families to move and start a life there In addition to $5,500 for moving expenses, the city is also offering incentives like YMCA memberships and golf packages to prospective new residents - Bookmark - CommentsGo to comments A lakeside city in Wisconsin is offering to pay new residents up to $9,500 to move in and contribute to the community. Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is located at the southern tip of Lake Winnebago, is home to a 1930's lighthouse, and is looking for a few good neighbors to fill its streets. The city currently has a population of approximately 44,000 people. It's offering new residents up to $9,500 to cover their relocation costs and local expenses, according to a city press release. Fond du Lac has partnered with an organization called MakeMyMove, which helps connect Americans looking to move with communities they may not know exist or haven't previously considered. The program uses signing bonuses, incentives, and networking opportunities to help entice Americans to populate areas looking for new blood. Other cities — like Bloomington, Indiana, Salina, Kansas, and Texarkana, Texas- have partnered with MakeMyMove in the past. The program's site says it will "help you find your happy place, and get paid to move there." For those interested in moving to the Wisconsin city, Fond du Lac will offer $5,500 for relocation costs, and throw in perks like YMCA memberships, local baseball experiences, golf packages, access to arts experiences, local dining offerings, and family activities. The community is seeking new residents to address its dwindling workforce and aging population. "Fond du Lac is leaning into what makes it stand out, nationally recognized school improvements, strong local employers, affordable living, lakeside amenities and a wide range of family-focused organizations and experiences," the press release says. In addition to the aforementioned perks, the organizers of the campaign also noted that the city's proximity to Lake Winnebago is perfect for those who enjoy aquatic activities. "Neighborhoods sit close enough to the shoreline to make fishing, windsurfing, sailing and skating part of daily life," the statement says. The city also has a yearly "Sturgeon Spectacular" event featuring "three days of spearing prehistoric fish through the ice, a state snow-sculpting championship, and a city-wide Bloody Mary contest." Those interested in taking advantage of the program can apply with local coordinators. In addition to MakeMyMove, the incentive program is sponsored by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and Envision Greater Fond du Lac. "This program is designed for people who want stable, meaningful in-person work," the press release says, "And the chance to build a life in a community that truly cares about its residents and workforce."
