A yellow alert is in force from 12am until 10am on Friday, covering the East Midlands, London and the South East, North East, North West, South West, West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber, and Wales. Thunderstorms are forecast to sweep northeastwards during the early hours, with the potential to bring 60mph winds and 2mm/hr of rainfall, according to the Met Office. Its forecast warned: "There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost. "Where lightning strikes or flooding occurs, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services. "There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. "Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures." Thunderstorms can heighten the risk of flash floods and power cuts, and the weather agency is urging people to stock up on batteries and torches, as well as putting together an emergency flood kit ahead of the severe weather, reports the Express.
