A boy who died after getting into difficulty when he entered a lake in Leicestershire to cool off after school has been described as a "beautiful, loving soul".
The family of Hayden Jones-Powell have paid tribute to the "cheeky, gorgeous" 13-year-old boy. Officers were called to Meynell Lake in Fosse Way at around 1.30pm yesterday.
Police divers were then called in an Hayden's body was recovered from the water. Leicestershire Police said there is no suggestion of any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner to establish the full circumstances in which the boy lost his life.
According to the boy's family, the youngsters had gone to the lake to paddle with his friends as he wanted to cool off after school. A fundraiser has now been launched by Hayden's family to give him "a beautiful send-off".
The description reads: "Hayden was a cheeky, gorgeous, 13 year old boy. He supported West Brom Albion, loved animals, was a great friend and had everything in life going for him. Without warning he was taken from us on the 25th of June.
"Hayden was like any other teenage boy who just went to the lake to paddle with his friends. He wanted to cool from the heat and enjoy the cool water; getting some respite from the heatwave after school.
"Tragically, Hayden got into trouble and he never made it home to his loving family consisting of a dad, two older brothers, an older sister and his mum."
The fundraiser has so far raised more than £2,300 from more than 130 supporters. The page states: "Hayden was such a beautiful, loving soul and we would like to be able to give him a send off befitting for him.
"We know nothing will bring Hayden back to us but knowing we have said goodbye in the best way we can will start the difficult process of healing our broken hearts."
The incident took place as the UK recorded temperatures of up to 40C, with a red and an amber warning for extreme heat covering most of England and Wales.
Leicestershire is under an amber warning for extreme heat until midnight tonight, meaning temperatures are expected to exceed 30C and potentially peak around 38C.
At the beginning of June, The Mirror launched the "Save Lives for Sam" campaign to stop the "catastrophic" deaths of 33 children who drown in England every year - "the equivalent of a classroom of children lost". Drowning in the UK has become an "epidemic" and a "national emergency," campaigners say.
The UK has seen a horrifying death toll of 19 children and adults killed in water related incidents during one week, in a record-breaking heatwave from May 24 to May 31.
