More rain on the way for WA after storm damages roofs, downs trees

A low pressure system brought heavy rain and damaging winds to WA's South West on Friday night. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) responded to 26 calls for help. What's next: More wet weather is expected to be on the way for Perth and the South West. Perth residents are bracing for more wet weather after a powerful cold front damaged roofs and downed trees on Friday night. Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Luke Huntington said the low pressure system had brought heavy rain and damaging winds to WA's South West as it crossed the coast overnight. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) responded to 26 calls for help across the metropolitan area and the South West, mainly for water ingress, roof damage and fallen trees. State Emergency Service (SES) crews worked through the night to fix the roof of one home in Lesmurdie, in the Perth Hills, after a tree fell on it. DFES also reported a ceiling had been damaged in a garage in Dianella, and the roof of a garden shed in Meadow Springs, near Mandurah, was torn off before landing on a side fence. Powerful wind gusts Rottnest Island recorded a wind gust of 93 kilometres per hour shortly after 6am on Saturday, while a gust of 89km/h was recorded in Mandurah. In the South West, Cape Leeuwin recorded a 109km/h wind gust shortly after 2am. The cold front also brought some significant rainfall, including 22 millimetres in Bickley in the Perth Hills, and 33mm in Glen Eagle near Jarrahdale, in the 24 hours to 9am on Saturday. In the South West, Newlands — east of Donnybrook — recorded 53mm in the gauge. In the Perth metropolitan area, 15mm of rain fell in the 24 hours to 9am. Mr Huntington said conditions would continue to ease throughout Saturday, but there was more rain ahead. "We'll still see some gusty showers [but] the wind gusts are going to be much less," he said. Up to 15mm of rain is expected in Perth on Sunday and similar conditions are forecast for Monday. Another cold front is expected to move through on Tuesday morning — with a possible morning storm forecast — and up to 25mm of rain is expected.
