A pair of sisters shared sickening smiles as police hauled them away after a mum-of-five was brutally hacked to death.
Amaya Cookie Diaz, 19, and Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, were arrested in Del Rio, a Texas city near the Mexico border, just hours after they allegedly stabbed Caroline Peña to death in broad daylight. Video filmed outside the suspects' home showed the moment Kitty grinned as two officers escorted her to a patrol car around on Thursday afternoon.
Amaya was also seen giggling after she reportedly yelled at a camera: "Stop recording." Another woman, Kyandra Renee Faz, 21, was also arrested over the murder, according to the Del Rio Police Department.
"On June 25, 2026, at approximately 2:10 p.m., officers with the Del Rio Police Department responded to Val Verde Regional Medical Center after receiving a report of a female suffering from multiple stab wounds," said a Del Rio Police Department spokesperson. "Upon arrival, officers determined the assault had occurred in the 800 block of East 10th Street. Due to the severity of her injuries, the victim was transported to a medical facility in San Antonio for emergency treatment."
No motive for the killing has yet been made public. Investigators have gathered surveillance video and have interviewed numerous witnesses. The department added: "At approximately 4:00 p.m., officers located and arrested Kitty Mia Diaz and Amaya Cookie Diaz without incident.
"A short time later, officers located and arrested Kyandra Renee Faz in connection with the investigation. All three suspects were transported to the Del Rio Police Department for booking and processing."
At about 9pm that day, investigators said they were notified that the victim had succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Following the death, Faz and the Diaz sisters were each charged with murder.
All three were transported to the GEO Correctional Facility, where they remain pending magistration. Independent journalist Michael Elizondo told The New York Post he rushed to the Diaz's home after hearing there were police in the area.
He added: "I didn’t know what was going on, but I knew it must be serious. I saw the first girl going into the car, and I thought, ‘Whatever.’…But the second one caught my eye. That girl was in a happy mood…She was all smiling, goofing off like nothing happened."
“All of the sudden I see the window go down, and the girl was sticking out her face, sticking out her tongue and goofing off,” Elizondo continued.
