Chantelle English has issued an urgent message to all parents after she felt something didn't quite add up when her two-year-old daughter Elsie woke up one morning
A mum has issued an urgent reminder to all parents to "always trust your instincts" after spotting a sign in her two-year-old daughter that led to a devastating diagnosis. As a parent, your child's health is the most important thing.
So the second you feel something is off, it's understandable to seek professional advice. That's what a mum did when her child woke up unable to stand one morning. Chantelle English has now sent an urgent message to other parents in the same boat. In a social media post, the caption read: "Mums this is your reminder to always trust your instincts!
"Three years ago today Elsie developed Septic Arthritis. It really was the worst 10 days of our lives. Nothing prepares you for the feeling of having your baby put to sleep and having to walk out and leave them.
"I am just so grateful that I trusted my gut and took her back because it could have been a very different story otherwise! We know our babies better than anyone!"
The mum shared more information in an Instagram post which was then recirculated on the Baby Bump & You account which boasts 123,000 followers.
Chantelle, from Essex, told her 91,000 followers: "This is your reminder to always trust your mother's instinct. Because mine saved my daughter's life...
"Just after my daughter turned two, she woke up one morning and couldn't stand. I thought she had maybe just hurt her foot, so left it a while but it just got worse and she was crying in pain every time she moved her leg.
"So when we my husband got home, I took her to A&E. She seemed quite happy, as long as she was sitting still and not being moved."
Once they arrived at the hospital, Chantelle noticed her daughter's knee had started to swell. When the hospital completed an X-ray and ran a few tests, poor Elsie couldn't stop screaming in pain.
Although the X-rays came back clear, Elsie's CRP (infection markers) in her blood were slightly raised at 14, but doctors claimed this was because she had a runny nose.
Chantelle continued: "They said nothing was wrong. She has probably twisted her knee. So they sent us home and said give it a few days and if it isn't better come back.
"The next morning she was still just as bad. I couldn't move her without her screaming in pain. It made no sense. She went to bed fine and then woke up and couldn't walk. When could she had hurt her leg this badly?"
After spending the entire day on Google where she couldn't shake the feeling "something was wrong", Chantelle took her child back to A&E.
She ended up seeing the same consultant who "reluctantly" agreed to do the bloods again. Then at 3am, the results came back and the family were taken into a room.
Chantelle recalled: "We were told that in 24 hours her CRP level had gone from 14 to 79. They said they believed she had Septic Arthritis.
"She needed to start IV antibiotics straight away. And was taken down to theatre to try and clear the infection from her knee.
"Unfortunately her infection levels continued to rise. Her next set of bloods showed her CRP had increased to over 100. So she went down to theatre a second time and this time had a drain fitted in her knee."
Fortunately, the process worked and Elsie's infection levels started to come down. After a while, she was unable to move her leg again and could finally walk out of the hospital.
After the "longest 10 days of their lives", Elsie was prescribed strong antibiotics, which she was required to take 4 times a day for the next 5 weeks.
Chantelle concluded: "But thankfully made a full recovery! If I had listed to doctors and left her a few days it could have been a very different story. Always trust your gut! We know our babies better than anyone."
Since she shared the post, many parents reached out to praise her bravery. One said: "Good on you. So glad you trusted your gut." Another added: "Oh this breaks my heart I'm so glad she's okay."
What is Septic arthritis?
Septic arthritis is a serious type of joint infection which must be treated as soon as possible. You can make a full recovery with treatment but if left untreated it can be more serious.
Treatment for septic arthritis includes:
- Antibiotics given straight into the vein
- Fluid drainage from the affected joint
- Antibiotic tablets for several weeks after leaving hospital
You must ask for an urgent GP appointment or get help from NHS 111 if you are experiencing the following symptoms:
- Severe joint pain, usually in just 1 joint, that started suddenly
- Swelling around a joint
- The skin around a joint has changed colour
- You feel generally unwell and have a high temperature, or feel hot, cold or shivery
