"I have seen a Bengal before and I don't think it was the same cat at all. And I had been up since 4am getting ready, so I wasn't tired or just woken up or anything. It is a mythical, unidentified feline - frequently described as a black panther or puma - that residents have claimed has been roaming the Essex countryside since the mid-1990s. There have been more than 100 sightings across Braintree, Colchester, Epping Forest and surrounding towns. The animal is generally described as being the size of a large dog, such as an Alsatian or Labrador, but displaying feline characteristics and movements. Specialists remain divided over whether the legend holds any truth, and the same seems to apply in this instance. The astonished observer revealed they emailed the footage to Essex Wildlife Trust seeking an expert opinion. They were told: "Trying to judge scale from the surrounding street furniture it doesn't look large enough for anything like a lynx but I agree it is a very striking animal. "I can't really provide any informative insights and it is possible it is a domestic animal with an interesting heritage." Wivenhoe boasts an extensive history of alleged big cat encounters, with residents regularly reporting mysterious large felines throughout the vicinity. The observations are frequently connected to the so-called Beast of Essex, with accounts varying from suspected pumas to panthers. These allegations have generated local fascination and police investigations, yet no conclusive physical evidence has materialised confirming the creature's presence. Since the turn of the century, there have been numerous assertions regarding the potential existence of the Beast of Essex. In 2000, John Hancock, founder of the Essex Big Cat Research Project, highlighted the likelihood of some form of big cat prowling the fields across Essex. He stated: "It is likely that people are seeing the black leopard or the panther. Although people may think the county would not be suitable for these animals to live, it still appears to provide the necessary cover, food and living conditions." Three years on, a retired farmer claimed to have spotted a big cat on the fringes of Witham. Then in 2017, David Stow was heading to Tesco in Great Notley when he claimed to witness something that 'looks like a big leopard or panther,' insisting he was '100 per cent certain' about what he saw.
