A hiker who stopped to cool off in a river tragically died after she was attacked by an alligator, which ripped off her arm in front of her horrified boyfriend.
The woman, 31, was hiking with her partner and best friend near Orlando, Florida, in the US on Sunday when they stopped at the Econlockhatchee River. The group was cooling in the river's shallow, three-foot-deep waters when they were shocked by the reptile, which locked its jaws around both of the woman's arms.
Her boyfriend, while desperately trying to prize both of her arms from its vice grip, scrambled to call emergency services, but the beast was able to rip off one of her limbs and brutalise the other.
Wildlife official Grant Eller, a lieutenant Florida's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said in a briefing that the group was kneeling in shallow waters at around 1.30pm when the attack took place. Mr Eller said the unnamed woman's boyfriend was “trying to get her arms away from the alligator’s mouth” when he called emergency services.
In the call recording, which was obtained by US publication NBC News, he can be heard screaming and crying while another woman described the horror of the situation.
The woman can be heard telling the dispatcher: "Ok, both her arms, both her arms, both her arms are off, like, basically." In reply, the dispatcher can be heard saying help is on the way before asking: "Does she still have her arms attached to her?" The woman then describes the damage the alligator was able to inflict.
She says: "One of them is, like, very hanging on [by a] thread, and the other was off." When she was asked by the dispatcher where the other arm had gone, she simply says: "Gone."
The call doesn't end there, with the line capturing more screaming as the woman's partner and her friend carry her and try to get the attention of their arriving rescuers. Mr Eller said the woman, who lived in Orlando, Florida, died before she was able to reach a hospital.
The official declined to identify the victim of the attack, saying authorities were still attempting to get in touch with her family, who did not live in the state.
Seminole County sheriff's deputies, said they had "harvested" two alligators spotted near the scene where the horror attack took place with the help of a professional trapper. Both of the reptiles, they said, were huge, clocking in at 13 and 12 feet long respectively. The DNA from both have been sent for lab analysis so the attacker could be identified.
The fatal attack is one of several that have taken place across central Florida in the last week alone, with alligators becoming especially territorial at this time of year - after they've finished mating.
