A man has shared how he got petty revenge on a neighbourhood boy who started mowing his lawn while he was recovering from a chronic injury - and says it ended up teaching the youngster a valuable lesson
A man has been praised for his "petty revenge" after falling out with a neighbourhood boy who had been mowing his lawn while he recovered from a chronic injury. He explained how he had been living with chronic pain and couldn't bear to mow his lawn himself - especially as his garden has several awkward corners because of the way the fence is positioned.
So, when a local boy knocked on his door offering to cut the grass for $40 (around £30) a visit, he happily agreed. He said on Reddit: "Some time last year, a neighbourhood kid came to my door and asked if I needed anyone to mow my lawn. I actually did because I was (and still am) dealing with chronic pain. His rate was $40 for the front and back with weed whacking.
"My yard isn't huge, but it is annoying to maintain because of the way the fence is placed, so I told him he could cut it.
"He always did a great job, so I had him keep doing it for the rest of the summer and into this year as well when the grass started growing."
Wanting to show his appreciation, the man even gave the boy a $5 (around £3.70) bonus in May, hoping to start the new mowing season on a positive note.
However, the gesture backfired when the boy later demanded even more money.
He added: "Two weeks later, when he cut my lawn again, I paid him the normal $40, but when I went back inside and he went home, he texted me that I owed him $5 more.
"I told him I already sent him exactly what I owed him, but instead of just saying he'd changed his rate or whatever, he lied and tried to gaslight me into thinking it was always $45 - as if I didn't have the ability to see my transaction history."
Rather than argue, the man decided it was time to start mowing the lawn himself - despite still dealing with chronic pain.
To his surprise, he found it was much easier on his body than he had expected. He also admitted that, being unemployed, it made more sense financially to do the job himself.
He said: "He texted me this week asking if I needed him to mow any time soon, and I told him that I'd be mowing my own lawn for now. I'm also unemployed, so I should probably be saving the money anyway. Take that, kid."
Commenting on the post, one user said: "Hope he learns his lesson. He tried the squeeze and now his tip is 100 per cent of nothing."
Another added: "I had been babysitting for a family for $50. One day they left $45 on the table instead. I was like, 'I can't babysit for you anymore.' They were like, 'Over $5?' Yes - over changing our agreement without communicating."
A third wrote: "Kid risked $40 to gain $5. Good for you - hopefully they learn something from this."
