A shopper was left gobsmacked when she found a glass bowl in a charity shop for £50, as she thought it was way too expensive - until she saw what was on the bottom
Rummaging through secondhand shops can uncover some truly remarkable hidden treasures, if you know what you're looking for. Browsing in charity and thrift stores is a beloved hobby for many, as it allows you to pick up everything from clothes to furniture at a fraction of the cost of buying new.
However, seasoned thrifters will know it's something of a lottery. Every shop carries different stock, given it's all donated by members of the public, and there's no certainty you'll come across something worth your while. But one woman on social media struck absolute gold when she stumbled upon a rare gem - despite initially thinking it was overpriced.
Vivian Ly, from California, was browsing in a Marshalls in the US when she spotted a glass bowl with a staggering price tag of $64 (£48). She described the bowl as looking "simple", and was "outraged" at the cost at first, feeling it was far too extravagant.
In fact, $64 was the reduced price, having originally been tagged at $75.99 (£57.49) in store, but marked down after gathering dust on the shelf without being snapped up.
She said: "I noticed this simple glass bowl that was priced outrageously for such a basic item. I was very confused and thought it was a mistake until I picked it up."
When Vivian lifted the bowl and flipped it over, she discovered three words etched on the bottom that made the hefty price tag make complete sense. The words read: "Tiffany and Co."
She added: "I realised it was something special when I examined it and saw 'Tiffany and Co.' engraved on the bottom rim. I'm not into many designer items, but that doesn't mean I don't know of them."
Vivian believes the bowl was most likely crafted from lead glass, commonly known as crystal, and would probably have sold for nearly $300 (£227) if brand new - making the $64 (£48) price tag quite the steal.
She also revealed she was gobsmacked to stumble across the item in Marshall's, as she "didn't even know" that Tiffany had ever produced a range of glass bowls or any homeware products whatsoever.
According to the Tiffany and Co. website, they provide an extensive selection of homeware, including glassware, tableware, flatware, and trays, alongside home décor such as cushions and blankets.
When Vivian posted the discovery on TikTok, scores of people descended on her comments section to declare they wouldn't purchase it themselves, as, regardless of the designer label, it's still "just a glass bowl".
One person said: "It's still a glass bowl."
Another added: "Still wouldn't spend more than $5 (£3.78) on it."
Vivian agreed with the commenters on her video and decided not to buy the glass bowl. She noted that while the Tiffany engraving does "boost the value" of the bowl due to its brand name, it was "still a regular glass bowl" and not something she felt she had any need for.
