De Minaur one of only two Aussie men through to Wimbledon second round
Key Points
Fifth seed Alex de Minaur has reached the second round of Wimbledon with a commanding victory over Argentina's Roman Andres Burruchaga, with a little luck falling his way elsewhere in the draw. After edging a tight opening-set tiebreak, the Australian took complete control, conceding just one game across the final two sets to seal a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, 6-0 win.
Meanwhile, big-hitting American fourth seed Ben Shelton was sensationally dumped out of Wimbledon by Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen, ranked 140 in the world.
In an epic battle under sunny skies, Virtanen beat Shelton 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (8-10), 6-2, 7-6 (11-9) to claim the biggest win of his career.
Shelton was Alex de Minaur's putative quarterfinal opponent and his exit clears the way for the Australian number one to finally reach a grand slam semifinal.
Next up for de Minaur is tricky French veteran Adrian Mannarino, who beat compatriot Titouan Droguet 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.
French Open champion Alexander Zverev is highest ranked in de Minaur's half of the draw, but the second seed has never gone beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Zverev progressed past Belgium's Alexander Blockx 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-0) in a match moved to centre court after Briton Jack Draper's injury withdrawal shifted Taylor Fritz's first-round match to court one.
Fritz beat Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 on a good day for most of the men's seeds, but a pretty poor day for the Australian men's contingent, with James Duckworth the only other victor among them, taking down Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Thanasi Kokkinakis lost in five sets to 10th seed Alexander Bublik, Dane Sweeny and Alexei Popryin were ousted in straights by former semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov and Jiří Lehečka respectively, while Rinky Hijikata went down 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to Jesper de Jong in a match held over two days after being paused by bad light.
