Donald Trump made the bizarre comment during a speech in which his teleprompter failed.
President Trump has joked that he would like to have a “threesome” with his two adult sons by awarding all three of them the Congressional Medal of Honor after his teleprompters stopped working during a speech.
The bizarre speech on Wednesday afternoon saw the US president address crowds in North Dakota and attend the dedication ceremony for the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.
Speaking about awarding himself and his two sons the Medal of Honor, Trump said: “As I see my two beautiful sons sitting there, I think I'm going to give one to myself and one to them. We'll have a threesome. I'll pick out one of the two. I'll give them the Congressional Medal of Honor for something.”
He had previously told his audience that his teleprompters had stopped working. The statement came as Trump discussed the historic US father-son duo of Arthur and Douglas MacArthur who both received the Medal of Honor, the highest military award for courage the US can bestow.
After discussing the Roosevelt and MacArthur bloodlines, Trump looked over at his own son’s and delivered the eyebrow-raising comment, before catching himself and reassuring the audience that he was only joking.
“You know, I want to give one to myself, but they tell me, and I'm allowed to,” he said.
“I'll get one for taking on Russia, Russia, Russia or something. We'll have a third pair. No, I'm only kidding... this is is dangerous to say because the fake news is up there. They're all over the place. When I joke, I always, I learned earlier, don't be sarcastic in politics.”
The remarks drew laughter from the crowd, though his unusual use of the word 'threesome' to describe him and his sons being awarded the medal has drawn comment.
But this is not the first time Trump has made questionable comments about his children, he has attracted criticism for remarks he's made over the years concerning women and girls - including comments about his own daughter, Ivanka Trump.
Ivanka Trump, 16 at the time, served as co-host at the 1997 Miss Teen USA pageant competition in Texas - an event her father owned, reports the Mirror US.
Brook Antoinette Mahealani Lee, then Miss Universe, allegedly had an exchange with Trump during which he remarked, "Don't you think my daughter's hot? She's hot, right?", she revealed to the New York Times.
Whilst appearing on The View to promote The Apprentice alongside his daughter, Trump was asked how he would react if Ivanka posed for Playboy magazine.
His answer was that his reaction would hinge on the magazine's content, before adding: "Although she does have a very nice figure. I've said that if Ivanka weren't my daughter, perhaps, I would be dating her."
Following the clip's circulation, a spokesperson insisted Trump was simply joking, and "making fun of himself for his tendency to date younger women."
