Family and friends have paid tribute to 'amazing' and 'fun-loving' Brittany Clark, who died after a brutal alligator attack in Florida
A happy day out with loved ones turned into complete tragedy for Brittany Clark, despite frantic attempts to save her.
The 31-year-old, from Orlando, was enjoying a hike in Florida's Little Big Econ State Forest with her boyfriend Chance Allison and her best friend Jayden Hernandez on 28 June when, at around 1.30 p.m, they decided to take a dip in the Econlockhatchee River.
While they were in the water, which was only around three feet deep, a 13ft alligator stealthy approached before viciously attacking Brittany, tearing off both of her arms.
"While they were swimming an alligator grabbed [Clark] by her arm and began the death roll," a medical examiner's report said. "Her boyfriend Chance grabbed the alligator trying to get it to release her when it took them both underwater."
A 'death roll' is when a gator rapidly spins its body to immobilise prey. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), alligators cannot chew and they use the underwater maneuver to dismember meat or drown prey by pinning it until it stops breathing.
The harrowing report, obtained by the Daily Mail, revealed that Allison managed to get the predator to release her arm 'for a moment' - but that it immediately then seized onto her other arm instead.
Bravely risking his own life, Chance continued to battle and eventually managed to prise his girlfriend from the alligator's jaws. But it was too late to save her.
In a desperate phone call to paramedics, Chance described the extent of Brittany's injuries. "Bad, real bad please, hurry… she's losing a lot of blood… we need to stop the blood," he said.
"One of them is hanging on by a thread, and the other one's off," he can be heard saying of her arms following the brutal attack.
"…She's still breathing she's just, her arms are f—ed so f—ing bad bro," a woman who took the phone, presumed to be Jayden, told operators. She described Brittany's injuries as "horrible", adding that "one of her arms is completely off and the other one is like attached barely".
"Please hurry, that's my best friend," she then begged.
Brittany can be heard crying in the background, as the dispatcher asks if her detached arm can be found. The victim, who loved outdoor adventures, was transported to a nearby hospital, but sadly died on the way there.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed in a statement: "A 13-foot alligator found at the incident location, and a 12.5-foot alligator half a mile away were captured and killed. Samples from the alligators have been collected and the FWC's investigation into this incident remains active.
"The FWC extends its deepest sympathies to the victim's family and loved ones," the statement concludes. "Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time."
Jayden has now paid tribute to her "loving and selfless" best friend, and opened up about how the horrifying attack unfolded in front of her. "There were air bubbles within our little triangle we made with our bodies in the water and I commented on how it might be a sneaky gator and Chance, Brittany's boyfriend swam right over it to show nothing was there and nothing was there," she wrote on Facebook.
"Britt literally commented on how she thought he was gonna act like he got attacked and we just laughed because chance would never do that because he's an amazing person and I know he is because she chose him and only one amazing strong soul chooses someone just as strong as it's own.
"It was just a joke… and just a few minutes later my best friend got attacked. We called for help, and it felt like eternity talking to the dispatcher but it was only 12 minutes. 12 whole long minutes of my bestfriend holding it together being the strongest person in the world."
Brittany's aunt has set up a GoFundMe to pay for her niece's remains to be flown back to her native California. Calling her death "a completely bizarre accident", the fundraiser describes her as "an amazing person and a fun-loving soul".
She was passionate about her pets and was an avid firearm enthusiast and motorcyclist, frequently showing photos of rifles and her motorcycle on her Instagram.
Meanwhile, Barr Street Trailhead, the popular hiking route where the attack took place, is now closed until further notice.
Attacks on humans are rare in the US, according to the Florida Wildlife Commission, but alligators are more territorial during their mating season, which typically lasts from April until the end of June.
