Bank Holiday Monday for England vs Mexico update drops as 1am World Cup match awaits England will face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City in the World Cup 2026 round of 16 on Monday, with the match set to kick off at 1am UK time The UK Government have confirmed it will not be declaring an extra Bank Holiday on Monday, July 6, despite the punishing late kick-off time for the World Cup round of 16 showdown against Mexico. Football fans up and down the country are readying themselves for a painful Monday morning after England's triumph over DR Congo last night means that the Three Lions will kick-off at 1am. Following Harry Kane's brace against Congo, Thomas Tuchel's England side will go head-to-head with co-hosts Mexico in the next round of the World Cup. While the Government has written to local councils urging them to consider special applications for extended licensing hours to screen the match, it has today told the Express that no additional Bank Holiday will be handed to supporters. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government reassured the Express that the Government would be 'backing the England team all the way' but noted that 'the current pattern of bank and public holidays is well established.' Last month, Sir Keir Starmer refused to be drawn on possible plans for a new Bank Holiday should England go all the way at the World Cup, which would fall on Monday, 20th June, the day after the final on 19th June. At the G7 summit in France, where world leaders had convened, the Prime Minister was pressed on whether he would declare a new Bank Holiday if England gets their hands on the trophy. Scotland has already reaped the rewards of an extra Bank Holiday for this World Cup, following the Scottish Government's announcement of an additional day off on Monday, June 15, to celebrate the Scottish national team's World Cup debut for the first time in decades. When pressed at the conference about whether England might receive a day off to commemorate a potential tournament triumph, Sir Keir told reporters he was reluctant to 'jinx' it, while noting that England's previous success, the iconic victory over West Germany in 1966, also occurred under a Labour administration. He went on to suggest that a new Bank Holiday for England could be on the cards, though he fell short of either dismissing the idea or pledging his commitment to one. He said: "I'm not going to jinx the World Cup. But, you know, the last time we won the World Cup, it was a Labour government. "And so it's absolutely clear that we only win World Cups under a Labour government. So let's hope that this is the next opportunity." No Bank Holiday was awarded in 2022 when England's women secured the Euros trophy for the first time, although Sir Keir Starmer, then leader of the opposition, had advocated for an additional Bank Holiday should the Lionesses lift the 2023 World Cup. At the time, he had expressed his backing for the proposal, calling it 'a proper day of celebration'. When England's women progressed to the 2023 World Cup final, he posted on Twitter: "There should be a celebratory bank holiday if the Lionesses bring it home." Sadly, the Lionesses narrowly missed out on World Cup glory, falling to a 1-0 defeat against Spain in the final. They did, however, lift the Euro 2025 trophy last summer, despite the Labour government opting against declaring a Bank Holiday to mark the occasion. JOIN US ON FACEBOOK!
