Key Points

Jacob Fearnley’s hopes of reaching Wimbledon’s third round for the first time were ended by Spaniard Jaume Munar. The 24-year-old Scotsman will reflect on missed opportunities, especially when he squandered four break points with the second set poised at 4-4. Ultimately the area for improvement to further in future years was obvious.

He was not outclassed. He was out-served. While Munar was able to claw his way out of trouble with unnerving regularity, his first serve pushing 138mph at critical moments, Fearnley’s holds took the form of a series of epics. His battling qualities and ability to find a whipping forehand winner in a manner reminiscent of his legendary compatriot Andy Murray is not in doubt. But a first serve which on average clocked up around 15mph below his opponent’s simply could not present him with enough free points, particularly at the clutch moments. Munar, in contrast, kept delivering each time Fearnley threatened to build momentum. By the end Fearnley won only 13 of 69 Munar’s first serves.
