Massive recall of 600,000 bags of popular chips sold nationwide because of Salmonella concerns The recalled bag of potato chips have best-by dates from July 27 through August 31 - Bookmark - CommentsGo to comments More than 600,000 bags of Utz-manufactured potato chips, including Zapp’s and Dirty brand varieties, have been escalated to the FDA’s most severe recall category due to potential Salmonella contamination. Three flavors of Dirty chips and three flavors of the New Orleans-themed Zapp's brand potato chips were subject to a recall that was upgraded to a Class I warning on June 24. The FDA classifies a Class I recall as "a situation in which there is reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." The recalled products have best-by dates from July 27 through August 31, 2026, and can be identified by specific batch codes on the packaging. Utz first issued a voluntary recall on April 28, with the FDA following with a notice about a week later. The company said the action was taken out of an abundance of caution after a seasoning ingredient containing dry milk powder from a third-party supplier was flagged as a possible source of Salmonella risk, despite final seasoning tests returning negative results before production. Salmonella can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramps, typically within hours or days of exposure. The six total recalled Utz-manufactured products, all sold in multiple sizes of plastic bags, include: As of the latest updates, the FDA and Utz have not reported any confirmed cases of illness tied to the recalled chips. Anyone who purchased the recalled items should not eat them and throw them away, or return them to the place of purchase for a refund, the FDA said. Utz is directing customers with questions about the recall or refund requests to its customer care line at 1-877-423-0149, available on weekdays.
