The Great American State Fair was held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to celebrate America's 250th anniversary, but the event descended into disaster for President Trump amid sparse crowds and a stage mishap
Trump has been left red-faced after a disappointing turnout at the Great American State Fair as the event descended into chaos.
The US president was reportedly so embarrassed by the thin crowds that he ordered the White House to scrub images from social media.
Donald Trump delivered a speech at the event, marking his administration's achievements ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations.
Footage from Trump's 30-minute address captured attendees walking out midway through it, leaving the president reportedly 'livid'.
Bird's-eye views of the gathering highlighted the vast empty spaces, which Trump was oblivious to from the stage.
The president swiftly instructed all White House accounts to pull images from the event and posted himself about the crowd 'being packed to the brim', according to CNN.
It is also reported that White House officials were at loggerheads with one another on the day due to the sweltering heat.
A source told CNN: "I do not understand why we are doing this so late.
"I'm really not sure who thought this was a good idea."
Beyond the poor attendance, the State Fair was quite literally crumbling as a large section of the stage came crashing down during a dance performance in front of dozens of onlookers.
Footage circulating online shows the black staging collapse as performers scramble out of the way and abandon their routine, with a noticeably sparse audience before them. The event is drawing considerable criticism as, during the sweltering heatwave, attendees are barred from bringing coolers onto the mall.
Trump's spectacular fireworks display is also not expected to commence until nearly midnight on 4th July.
On Wednesday, the president reaffirmed his intention to deliver a 'really long speech' despite the scorching temperatures.
Trump said: "On July 4, it's going to be approximately 107 degrees out, and I'm going to go, and I'm going to make a really long speech just to show that I can do anything."
Security measures enforced by the Secret Service and DC police further restrict what visitors are permitted to bring, with food and water bottles banned from the vicinity. Bottles of water on sale inside the event were priced at $5.
Adding to the disappointment, several high-profile acts have withdrawn ahead of the 250th-anniversary festivities, with soul band the Commodores and funk artist Morris Day both pulling out in recent weeks.
These acts have not been replaced, with Trump 'filling the gaps' himself.
The Express has contacted the White House seeking further comment.
