Meeting to decide Liberal MP Moira Deeming's future cancelled amid court battle Fri 3 Jul 2026 at 2:25pm Victorian MP Moira Deeming has won a two-week reprieve as a Liberal candidate for the November state election, after the party agreed in the Supreme Court to cancel imminent plans to revoke her preselection. Mrs Deeming sought an injunction against the party and president Brian Loughnane to stop the state executive from disendorsing her candidacy, after she refused to apologise to her party room colleague Matthew Guy. She had accused Mr Guy of putting her in a headlock at a Macedonian community event in May. The upper house MP first took her complaint to the state opposition leader's office before reporting the allegation to Victoria Police. Victoria Police dismissed the complaint after reviewing CCTV footage, which appeared to show Mr Guy place his hand on Mrs Deeming's back during a conversation at the crowded Sunshine venue. Opposition Leader Jess Wilson joined Mr Guy's demands for an apology, but Mrs Deeming refused. The Liberal Party's state executive was due to meet at 6.30pm on Friday to revoke her preselection for the Western Metropolitan Region in the upper house, a position that would have guaranteed her election in November. But she launched the last-ditch Supreme Court action late on Thursday in an attempt to save her political career. The Liberal Party on Friday afternoon agreed not to remove her as the candidate until the dispute can be heard later this month. Loading
