A shark up to six feet long has attacked a teenager out fishing on a boat in McIntosh County, Georgia, with reports that he was bitten on the thigh and badly injured
A 13-year-old boy has been badly injured "after being bitten on the thigh by a shark" while out fishing on a boat in the United States.
Witnesses said that the boat was brought in to shore with people rushing to help before emergency services arrived in McIntosh County, Georgia.
The incident happened near near Ossabaw Island, about 20 miles south of Savannah, on Wednesday afternoon with the Coast Guard reportedly saying the victim was transferred to a local hospital.
In desperate scenes, the dad ran frantically to try and get medical assistance for the teenager when the boat docked.
The teen was fishing with two others and his dad when the shark is understood to have attacked and latched onto his thigh.
“I was sitting right here reading a book on the back of the boat and we saw a boat coming up and we could tell from a distance that there was trauma going on,” a witness Terry Tatum told WTOC.
“I went to the boat and saw three teenagers on the boat and a traumatic scene. They told me that they were fishing.
"They caught a large shark, five or six feet, and tried to unhook it and the shark latched onto the young man’s right thigh and I got the first aid kit and assisted.”
Also at the dock was McIntosh County EMS volunteer BJ Comer who ran to assist. She said: “I ran to my car and grabbed my jump bag thinking we need a tourniquet.
"When I ran down the dock with my co-worker, the ambulance were pulling up at the same time. My co-worker and I were able to load the patient off the boat and they transported for EMS."
