A wildfire has ripped through around 750 hectares of forest near the Costa Brava, forcing as many as 12,000 people to shelter indoors.
The flames, fanned by the tramontana wind, remain active in Girona, northeast Spain, with a massive plume of smoke hovering over the tourist hotspot this evening.
Residents in the Empordà area have been sent preventive confinement orders affecting around 12,000 people.
A further 40,000 people have meanwhile received an Es-Alert - Spain's national public warning system for emergencies - on their mobiles phones, providing them with instructions to stay safe.
