People who bank with Monzo do not have long to wait
It's good news for Monzo customers looking to make the switch, with the wait almost over.
Monzo Mobile is set to launch in summer 2026. According to the digital app-based bank, the new service will offer three flexible eSIM-only plans. However, you'll need to be a Monzo customer to sign up.
With more than 15 million personal and business customers, Monzo says its mobile service offers 5G data speeds, 99% UK coverage, and unlimited calls and texts. As an added bonus, customers can check coverage in their area before signing up.
It confirms: "You’ll need a Monzo account. You’ll need to keep your Monzo current account open to keep your mobile plan. Ts&Cs apply. UK residents and 18+ only."
Mobile phone discount
Boasting "a competitive price up front, then 5% off each year", it adds that customers could get "up to 30% off over time" with "no hidden fees" and "no surprise charges".
Travelling abroad?
Some of its plans include roaming with destinations like:
- Austria
- Cyprus
- Denmark
- France, Greece
- Malta
- Netherlands
- Hong Kong
- Japan
- Malaysia
- Morocco
- New Zealand
- Philippines
- Singapore
- South Africa
- South Korea
- Taiwan
- Thailand
- United Arab Emirates
- United States
You can see the full list here. It cautions: "We may add to these or change them in the future, but this is what you can expect this summer."
What is an eSIM?
Monzo explains: "An eSIM is a SIM that's built into your phone. Instead of a physical card you slot in, it's a small chip that's already there.
"You activate it by downloading a plan directly to your phone. It works the same way as a regular SIM - it connects you to a mobile network so you can make calls, send texts, and use data. The only difference is there's nothing to post, insert, or swap."
It reminds people who want to switch that:
- Your phone needs to support eSIM. Most phones made after 2020 do, but we'll check this during sign-up.
- You can have an eSIM and a physical SIM in the same phone at the same time. This means you can keep your current provider while you try Monzo Mobile.
- If you get a new phone, you'll need to reinstall your eSIM. You can do this in the Monzo app
