EXCLUSIVE: The Duke of Sussex is still in the midst of a lengthy battle to have his taxpayer-funded police protection reinstated in his home country, with one royal expert believing that his brother would have a sympathetic view towards his struggle
Prince Harry's UK trip with his wife and children appears to hang in the balance. The Duke of Sussex is set to travel to London alone this week without Meghan or Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet - despite plans for them to join him here.
Harry’s trip was thrown into chaos last week, as it was revealed that his request for taxpayer-funded police protection while in his home country was denied. It is unclear at the moment if Harry will be joined by the rest of his family for engagements and visits outside of the capital.
He has been waiting for a review by the Risk Management Board (RMB), part of the process by which the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec) rules on his security requirements, but found out last week that this has yet to take place.
Harry has previously stated that he feels it is “not safe” to bring his wife and children to the UK without adequate protection. Because of this fear, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond believes Harry’s brother Prince William, with whom he is embroiled in a bitter feud, would be sympathetic to his desire to keep his family safe.
Jennie told the Mirror : “William must surely have been paying attention to the row over Harry’s security. He could hardly avoid it. I would have thought it was one area in which he might have a measure of sympathy for his brother.
“He knows just how important it is to protect your family. Like me, he might wonder why the decision has been taken not to give Harry and his family security for this very short period of time. But, obviously, this is a decision which he cannot and would not get involved in.”
While Jennie believes the Prince of Wales would be feeling sympathetic towards his brother from behind closed doors, she does not think that a reconciliation between the warring princes is on the horizon anytime yet.
“I think it’s still too early to anticipate any sort of meeting between the brothers,” she said, “but if the visit does go ahead and the children meet the King, it could conceivably be the start of a thaw in the ice between William and Harry. But I wouldn’t take any bets on it.
“Trust is still a major issue for William, who is a very private man. He is also a very protective, loving husband who was enraged by the insults and allegations hurled at Catherine by the Sussexes. I’m not sure he will ever find a way to forgive his brother for that.”
Harry and Meghan have repeatedly aired their grievances about their time as working royals, most notably levelling serious accusations against senior royals in their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, their Netflix docuseries in 2022, and Harry memoir Spare in 2023.
And while Harry is working to mend his relationship with his father King Charles, Jennie believes the hurt is still too fresh for the Prince and Princess of Wales to simply forgive and forget.
The royal expert said: “There’s absolutely no doubt that the King would love his sons to mend their rift. Remember how Harry claimed his father had pleaded with them not to make his final years a misery? I think Catherine is by nature a peacemaker, but she knows, too, that William can be incredibly stubborn.
“And, in the end, it will be up to William to decide whether he wants to patch things up with his brother. I suppose it could start with the odd text or birthday card….. one day. But as I have said, trust is the important factor here. And, as yet, I do not think that William trusts Harry or Meghan.”
