England face their most daunting challenge at the World Cup so far, with the Three Lions facing off against co-hosts Mexico in their iconic Azteca Stadium
England can book their place in the World Cup quarter finals, but only if they can beat the elements and Mexico later tonight.
The Three Lions will have to do it in Mexico's own backyard and the prospect of a daunting occasion in the Azteca Stadium comes just days after they were almost embarrassed by DR Congo.
Team news will emerge in the coming hours but it looks like Thomas Tuchel will once again be without the injured Reece James, who was the only England player who failed to train on Saturday.
Thankfully, common sense has prevailed and the kick-off time remains 1am despite suggestions FIFA were planning to move the game forward by six hours — a move which was met with anger from both camps.
Elsewhere, there's a tasty clash between Norway and Brazil to get stuck into (more Erling Haaland and Gabriel fireworks, anyone?) so stay with us for all the latest below...
Key Events
Despite the scenes outside the England hotel, the mood in Mexico City was a largely positive one, with supporters mingling ahead of what is a huge clash at the Azteca in the early hours of Monday morning.
It was the farce of all farces. FIFA considering changing the kick off time by six hours, with neither the English or the Mexican Football Assosication contacted.
Both camps were furious at the late change, with the move set to be made due to forecasts of extreme weather after the game.
The FA discovered the potential logistical shake up via social media, with their plans thrown into complete disarray.
John Cross takes you inside those chaotic hours, when FIFA ultimately decided to stick to their guns and kick off at 1am...as we all planned to start with.
England had been in contact with FIFA prior to tonight’s match, with fears over Mexican fans targeting their hotel in the build-up to the game.
Ecuador saw similar disruption tactics before their last 32 clash in Mexico City.
FIFA had put in roadblocks around the hotel the Three LIons were staying in, stating that fans wouldn’t be allowed within 300 metres.
However, social media footage showed some supporters making their presence known, with fireworks set off and loud music being played.
It hasn’t appeared to have too much of an effect, with sources suggesting that players found the spectacle more amusing than intimidating.
Let’s hope they packed the earplugs!
After the on/off drama on Friday night, there are hopes that the game itself won't actually be impacted too greatly.
Thunderstorms are expected in Mexico City in the hours leading up to kick off, which is at 6pm local time (1am UK).
But the latest forecasts suggest they could ease off by the time the game is scheduled to get underway. However, rules at the tournament state that a game must be delayed if lightning strikes within eight miles of the stadium.
There then needs to be a 30-minute period without strike before the game can restart. That happened when Mexico played Ecuador, with the game pushed back an hour in total.
That all means we could be in for a long....and late one tonight. Get your caffiene ready!
If you (wisely) got a few hours shut eye ready for tonight, you missed some real drama as the round of 16 continued.
France overcame Paraguay, but only after a hugely - let's say physical, encounter.
The referee at the centre of that has come in for some major stick as well.
Reece James missed England's final training session before their World Cup Round of 16 clash against co-hosts Mexico with the Chelsea star now a doubt to feature at the Azteca Stadium.
The right-back has been absent since the 0-0 draw with Ghana in Boston due to a hamstring strain. Thomas Tuchel had shared optimism he might be able to prove his fitness in time to face Mexico — but that now appears a long shot.
We'll get the team news around 11.30pm UK time, all eyes will be on who starts at right back.
Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of England's World Cup Round of 16 match with Mexico.
