Ten-man England reach World Cup quarter-finals with Jude Bellingham brace in Mexico thriller MEXICO 2-3 ENGLAND: A marvellous quick-fire brace from Jude Bellingham helped the Three Lions progress past Mexico despite losing Jarell Quansah to a red card early in the second half Jude Bellingham rose above the altitude and a hostile home crowd to inspire England to a thrilling win over Mexico as they ran the gauntlet in the Azteca, surviving a second half onslaught after being reduced to 10 men. A World Cup quarter-final showdown with Norway now awaits for Thomas Tuchel and his side — but just as in previous fixtures, England had to stomach their fair share of turbulence before emerging victorious. A rapid brace from Bellingham had silenced the hostile home crowd but there were still plenty of twists and turns ahead, with the visitors unfortunate not to head in level at the break. Jarell Quansah was then shown a red card following a VAR review early in the second half for a high tackle before a Harry Kane penalty restored England's two-goal cushion. Raul Jimenez also scored from 12 yards, though, to put Mexico back in touch with Thomas Tuchel's men. Mexico would then lay siege on Jordan Pickford's goal fuelled by the backing of their vociferous fans. But England stood firm and rode out 11 torturous minutes of additional time to record one of the most memorable victories of the Tuchel era. It was Mexico who had the first big chance of the match, Jimenez sending a bullet header towards Pickford's near post. Fortunately for England, their keeper sprung down to his left and batted the ball away with a big, powerful hand. Anthony Gordon, dazzling and direct, responded positively with a driving run which yielded a corner and the flying Barcelona winger then forced Raul Rangel into a save from an acute angle after chopping back onto his right foot shortly following the first half hydration break. But just when it looked like Mexico were about to kick on after the mid-half interval, England struck. And as the man himself says, who else but Bellingham to deliver the seismic blows. England's talisman landed the first of his devastating one-two when he ghosted into the penalty area to head home a superb Bukayo Saka cross at the far post. And with Mexico still reeling after shipping their first goal of the tournament, Bellingham plundered his second barely 60 seconds later after England turned the ball over midway inside the visitors half, applying the finishing touch to Harry Kane's low ball after it trickled across the face of the six-yard box. But Mexico picked themselves up from the canvas and hit back almost immediately through their own star man as Julian Quinones lashed home after the ball fell into his path following a free-kick. That brought the hostile crowd back into play and all of a sudden, England, seemingly unaffected by the pre-match weather delay, had to weather another storm as Mexico hammered on the door in search of an equaliser. Pickford saved them again with a majestic flying stop to thwart Raul Jimenez before Bellingham popped up in his own penalty area to stop a certain goal just before the break. The drama didn't stop there as Quansah was sent off for a high tackle following a VAR intervention in the 54th minute. It was then a tale of two penalties, with Kane putting England 3-1 up after good work from the impressive Gordon. Any hopes that would lay the foundations for a calmer finale were quickly extinguished by Jimenez, who put Mexico right back in it with a successful spot-kick of his own.
