The Wegovy weight loss pill is the UK's first GLP-1 weight-loss tablet and offers patients a new alternative to weekly weight-loss injections
The new Wegovy weight loss pill has officially gone on sale, with shipping beginning today. The medication marks a landmark moment as the UK's first GLP-1 weight-loss tablet, offering patients a fresh alternative to weekly weight-loss injections.
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in the Wegovy injection, but is taken once daily as a tablet rather than once a week via a self-injectable pen. Demand is already soaring, with many patients hopeful that the pill will provide a more convenient option for those who are nervous about needles, travel frequently, or simply prefer a daily tablet over a weekly injection.
However, pharmacy experts warn there is one crucial consideration. Unlike the vast majority of tablets, the Wegovy pill comes with strict guidelines on how it must be taken.
Abdal Alvi, Chief Clinical Officer at Simple Online Pharmacy, said: "The Wegovy pill is a major development because it gives patients another way to access semaglutide without self-injecting. But it is not a tablet you can simply take with breakfast or your morning coffee. The way it is taken has a direct impact on how well the medication is absorbed, so patients need to understand the routine from day one."
Mr Alvi said: "The important point is that this is the same active ingredient as Wegovy injections, but delivered in a completely different way. The pill may feel easier because it avoids injections, but it also requires a daily routine and very strict administration rules. For some patients that will be the right choice, but others may still prefer the rhythm of a once-weekly injection.", reports OK!.
How much weight can you lose on the Wegovy pill?
Clinical trial findings indicate that patients taking the Wegovy pill can shed a considerable amount of weight when taken correctly alongside dietary and lifestyle adjustments. During trials, participants taking the 25mg daily dose lost approximately 14% to 17% of their body weight over 64 weeks, depending on adherence.
Mr Alvi said: "The results are clinically meaningful. Losing around 15% of body weight can make a real difference to health for many patients, particularly those living with obesity-related conditions.
"But the higher figure is linked to patients taking the medication consistently and correctly. With the pill, adherence to the routine really matters."
He added: "But importantly, this is not about taking a tablet and doing nothing else. Wegovy works best when it is used alongside healthier eating patterns, increased physical activity and long-term behaviour change."
Mr Alvi said: "Patients should not expect to start on the maximum dose immediately. Like injectable GLP-1 treatments, the dose is increased gradually to help the body adjust and reduce the likelihood of side effects."
How do you take the Wegovy pill?
This is where the pill differs most from other tablets. It must be taken on an empty stomach, with no more than 120ml of plain water, followed by at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking coffee, taking supplements or taking other medications.
Mr Alvi said: "The most common mistake people are likely to make is taking the Wegovy pill like any other tablet. You should take it after an eight-hour fast - for most people, this would be first things after waking up - and before coffee, food or other medication. Even drinking too much water can reduce how well it is absorbed."
The tablet must also be swallowed whole. He added: "Do not crush, split or chew the tablet. The tablet has been designed to work intact, and breaking it can interfere with how the medicine is absorbed."
What are the side effects?
Typical side effects are predominantly digestive in nature and may include nausea, stomach discomfort, constipation, diarrhoea and changes in appetite. Mr Alvi said: "Digestive side effects are relatively common when starting GLP-1 treatment, particularly as the dose increases.
"For many patients these symptoms improve as the body adjusts, but anyone experiencing severe or persistent symptoms should speak to their prescriber."
He advised patients to seek urgent medical attention for severe abdominal pain, signs of an allergic reaction, persistent vomiting, dehydration symptoms, jaundice, sudden vision changes or any symptoms that feel severe or unusual.
Who might prefer the pill?
Data from Simple Online Pharmacy suggests that interest in the pill is particularly high amongst those who have been reluctant to use injections. Mr Alvi said: "We are seeing strong interest from patients who have avoided GLP-1 treatment because of needles, as well as people who feel a daily tablet fits better with their routine.
"However, the pill is not automatically the easiest option for everyone. The daily fasting routine is strict, whereas an injection is once weekly. The best treatment is the one a patient can use safely, correctly and consistently."
He added: "This is about widening choice. For some people, the pill will remove a major barrier to starting treatment. For others, injections may still be the better fit."
How much does the Wegovy pill cost?
A number of retailers are offering the weight loss pill at varying prices. Simple Online Pharmacy's Wegovy pill pricing starts at:
- 1.5mg - from £69 as part of a three-month bundle
- 4mg - from £109
- 9mg - from £139
- 25mg - from £189
Key rule to remember
The Wegovy pill could represent a significant breakthrough in weight-loss treatment, but experts warn that patients must fully grasp just how different it is from standard medication. Mr Alvi said: "The Wegovy pill is exciting because it gives patients a new option, but it has to be taken properly.
"If you take it correctly, follow the fasting rules and use the treatment as part of a wider health plan, it can be a powerful tool. If you take it casually with coffee or breakfast, you may not get the benefit you are expecting.
"The message is simple: this is a prescription medicine, not a shortcut. Used properly, it can support meaningful weight loss, but lasting results still come from the habits patients build around it."
