Vet warns dog owners to think twice before buying much-loved breed One of the UK's most popular dog breeds is prone to health issues Some dog breeds are thought of to be the ideal family companion thanks to their nature and looks. Small dogs have been favoured for being cute, requiring less living space, doing less exercise and being cheaper to feed. While there are plenty of breeds to choose from, one vet has voiced concerns about a specific breed. They explained that one of the UK's favourite dogs might not be as easy to look after as many think. Dr Suzanne Moyes, who teamed with Green Pantry, offered a warning to anyone thinking of getting a Cockapoo. The breed has seen huge popularity in recent years, but there are some health issues that they can suffer from. Dr Moyes said: "Small breeds like Cockapoos are especially popular, not just for their adorable looks but also for their affectionate and friendly nature. "These dogs have big personalities and make excellent companions, particularly for families seeking a loving and loyal pet." But potential health complications are a concern for these dogs. Waggel states that Cockapoos can expect a lifespan of around 12-15 years. Its lifespan is significantly affected by genetics, overall health, and nutritional intake. Highlighting one primary health problem faced by Cockapoos, Dr Moyes said that obesity as an issue. The veterinarian suggested: "This is easily remedied with a healthy and balanced diet and ensuring everybody is aligned on what the dog should and should not be fed. "As tempting as it can be to slip your pet some food from your plate, this is one of the leading causes of obesity in dogs, and it can, in turn, lead to other health issues such as joint issues and diabetes." Another issue facing Cockapoos is hip dysplasia, a commonly inherited disorder in which the hip joint develops abnormally, causing instability and discomfort. Dr Moyes continued: "Hip dysplasia is an issue that can be exacerbated by obesity. While you can't always prevent joint problems such as hip dysplasia, there is much you can do to help. "For example, try to ensure they get regular exercise, and you could consider complementary therapeutic regimes such as hydrotherapy or laser therapy." The vet explained that while it's crucial to be mindful of these conditions, they are not guaranteed to happen to every day. Each dog is different so some might encounter these problems but with the right attentive care, they can still have fulfilling, healthy lives.
