Vinted can be a treasure trove for picking up people's second-hand goodies, and they're usually significantly less than the recommended retail price. Of course, you'll get a few chancers who sell items for more than the RRP, claiming that they're rare, vintage, or sold out, but most people are just trying to earn some money for their old items.
That's why, when one woman found a book she really wanted to read on the app, she was thrilled to find it at a discount price compared to a bookstore. But when she opened it up, an issue arose for her. Shan, who often posts her book recommendations on TikTok, posted a little rant about people who resell items on Vinted.
"If you're going to buy stuff from charity shops to resell on Vinted, then don't leave the receipt inside the item," she urged, because she got an annoying surprise when she opened up her latest book purchase.
"I bought this book on Vinted, and inside was the receipt that lets me know that this book was bought a week ago for £1.50, and I spent £4 on it," Shan said.
It was a Doctor Who book, 'Doctor Who: The Day She Saved the Doctor: Four Stories from the TARDIS,' and it's a set of short stories released in 2018.
This led to her feeling ripped off, and like she hadn't managed to bag the bargain she thought she had initially when she parted with her cash.
However, someone pointed out: "It's worth as much as much you are willing to pay. I don’t see the problem," so she should still be happy with her purchase.
"Yeah, it's not that serious," Shan responded, but she was still disappointed that the receipt had been carelessly left in the book she'd bought at an inflated price.
Another person wrote; "I see the point, though, don't leave the receipt in."
While someone else fumed: "I think reselling is totally fine, but the actual receipt would send me!"
Another person added: "Leaving the receipt is dumb, but reselling has done its good function, getting a niche item into the possession of someone who really wants it."
Shan wanted to point out that she wasn't actually "mad" about it, but she just didn't want to see the receipt for herself. Resellers should be more subtle when selling things on for an inflated price.
Tips for selling books on Vinted
1. Make sure you list whether it's paperback or hardback, and write the condition of the book so this cannot be disputed at a later date.
2. Take pictures of every angle of the book, including the spine, which, if it's cracked, explicitly mention this!
3. Most standard, mainstream paperbacks sell for between £1 and £3. You can definitely charge more if it's a particularly desirable book.
4. When packing, do not just throw a book straight into a thin plastic mailing bag. Parcels get tossed around during transit, and if the corners arrive crushed, the buyer can claim a refund.
5. Always wrap the book in a layer of bubble wrap or cardboard first, or use a padded bubble mailer to ensure it arrives safely.
