UK adults have identified the top unexpected moments of everyday joy - from finding a £10 note in old jeans to getting home just before the rain starts
Discovering a parking space without circling endlessly, realising it's Thursday when you assumed it was Wednesday, and unearthing a tenner in an old pair of jeans rank among life's greatest unexpected sources of joy, a recent survey has revealed.
Research involving 2,000 adults working Monday to Friday showed 33% actively seek out 'little unexpected joys' to brighten a dull day. The typical person encounters at least three such moments weekly, with 21% depending on them most during midweek to boost their spirits.
Additional sources of happiness included arriving home moments before rainfall begins, a parcel turning up within its scheduled window, and remembering to bring bags to the supermarket.
The study was commissioned by Gala, who unveiled a 'Push for Joy' button on Manchester's streets in an effort to deliver extra happiness to the North West.
A spokesperson from the brand said: "Sometimes it is the little things that can give you the most joy. In a busy week, those unexpected moments can help shift your mindset and add a bit of lightness to your day.
"It can also make the feeling even more rewarding when it comes when you least expect them. It's a reminder that even on the most routine days, there are still opportunities to find small pockets of happiness."
The research also revealed 19% derive satisfaction from completing everything on their to-do list, while 17% love discovering a television series with episodes already available, or learning it's a bank holiday Monday the following week (17%).
More than a fifth (22%) find their energy levels start high at the beginning of the week and gradually drop off by the end. But for 69%, Monday was found to be their least favourite day of the week, with as many as 51% generally disliking or hating it.
Work-related stress (27%), fatigue or low energy (22%) and technology failures had the greatest negative impact on how people feel throughout the day.
Meanwhile, time-related victories have the most significant positive effect on people's mood (26%) – from skipping queues to leaving work ahead of schedule.
Thirty three percent of participants in the OnePoll.com study revealed that an 'unexpected win' frequently lifts their spirits for the remainder of the day.
The button will head to Brighton on the 13th July, inviting Brits to press it for the chance to win a variety of joy-related prizes including the chance to win a holiday.
A spokesperson for the brand added: "It's clear that people don't need big milestones to feel better, it's often the quick, everyday wins that make the biggest difference.
"A small boost at the right moment can shift your mindset entirely and help you move through the day in a more positive way.
"Those flashes of good fortune and ease can be just as powerful as something you've been planning or working towards."
