'I hate my offensive name - I'm banned from so many websites because of it' A woman has shared her frustration at being unable to use her name online because it triggers swear word filters - and it seems she's not the only one to have encountered the issue A woman has hit out at her parents for giving her a name so "inappropriate" that it frequently causes issues online. She revealed that her name is routinely blocked by websites as "offensive" because it includes a swear word - despite its origins in Greek mythology. Venting her frustration on social media, she explained: "I have an 'inappropriate' name. My name is Cassandra. A lot of the time, when a website asks for a username or nickname, I can't use it because it contains 'characters that are not allowed'. I can't use any variations either (like Cassie or Cass).." Due to the second, third and fourth letters of her name forming a profanity, she has repeatedly been compelled to set up accounts using entirely different usernames, which creates confusion and makes it more difficult for others to locate or reach her. It appears she's far from alone in facing this predicament, with numerous others recounting comparable experiences online. One Reddit user disclosed they actually succeeded in getting an entire software system modified after highlighting the fault. They said: "Back in maybe 2003 or 2004 we installed a firewall at work. I'm a computer software developer. "Couldn't search for anything with 'class' in it. Until I went and complained." Another user noted: "The same happens to people from the English town of Scunthorpe." A third person said: "Let me introduce you to the Austrian village F***ing, which was renamed a couple of years ago to Fugging because people kept stealing the village's sign and it attracted many people who went there just for a photo. "It was also featured in an episode of The Grand Tour." Another user added: "It's 2026 and this has been a problem since the '90s or the '00s. "We have the technology - surely companies can come up with a list of exceptions that don't trigger the swear filters. "Then again, that would take time and effort (I don't know how much - I'm not a programmer), and that costs money that could be going to the shareholders." A final user noted: "Congratulations, you've discovered the Scunthorpe Problem, so named because some software wouldn't allow people form Scunthorpe, England, to register their own town name because it contained the letters c***."
