Justin Baldoni has finally broken his silence following his bitter legal battle with Blake Lively, revealing he and his family are still recovering from the "trauma" stemming from "the injustice and the pain" they have endured following the fallout with his costar.
In an emotional social media clip posted on Wednesday, the It Ends With Us director and actor, alongside his wife, Emily Baldoni, said they wished to set the record straight about the two-year battle with Lively following the filming of their 2024 Colleen Hoover screen adaptation.
The couple revealed they had stayed silent throughout the explosive two-year dispute because they wanted to let the courts "run its course".
Explaining why they had waited so long to speak, Justin said: "We have not spoken publicly for the better part of the last two years, and it’s not because we haven’t had anything to say, because Lord knows we have. But it just felt like every time we went to make a video like this, we wanted to speak, something was telling us not to. It just didn’t feel like the right time."
His wife added that the bitter legal row left lasting scars on their family. She said: "We’ve had to wrestle with so many things and try to understand so many things, like, how could something like this even happen? Let alone disguised as a fight for women. So much to unpack. And the truth is, reality is that there’s been a lot of trauma for us to move through as a family, which also makes it hard to speak."
Justin said they had resisted speaking out while the case dominated headlines. "There have been so many painful things that have been spoken into existence over the last couple [of] years, and that created so much noise, and we didn’t want to add to the noise. We just wanted to let the justice system run its course."
Last month, the legal saga came to an end when a federal judge ruled that Justin and Wayfarer Studios must pay Blake Lively's legal fees after the actress accused him of harassment and retaliation. The costs totalled $8,035,040.88, or roughly £6 million.
U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman tossed out most of Lively’s, including claims of harassment, defamation and conspiracy. Liman let three other claims stand: breach of contract, retaliation and aiding and abetting in retaliation.
Now that the drama is all done and dusted, Justin said the experience has brought his family closer as well as changing his outlook on life.
"We are healing. And if you’ve ever been through something traumatic, you know that healing isn’t linear. It looks different every day," he said. "And we have had to rethink for ourselves what is real and what matters. And it’s this. It’s the kids. It’s our family. It’s our friends. It’s our community who’ve been there for us. It’s our faith. I think we’re closer and more devoted and steadfast in our faith than we’ve ever been."
Blake Lively was not spotted at ex-bestie Taylor Swift's wedding last weekend, with the pair understood to have fallen out after Lively threatened Baldoni with her "dragons".
According to a defamation countersuit filed by Baldoni, Lively texted him: “If you ever get around to watching Game of Thrones, you’ll appreciate that I’m Khaleesi, and like her, I happen to have a few dragons. For better or worse, but usually for better."
However, it seems that the Baldoni clan may have a few dragons of their own to come. At the end of Wednesday's video, Emily hinted as such by saying: "There is so much more to say."
She added: "That time will come, but for now, we are going to focus on continuing the healing and hanging out with our kiddos and enjoying life."
