Killer called 999 then pretended to be asleep after murdering his own mum Richard Clayton admitted killing his elderly mother at their home in Newham, east London, when he appeared at the Old Bailey, where he will be sentenced in September A man who pretended to be asleep during his police interviews after strangling his mother has pleaded guilty to the woman's murder. Richard Clayton, 45, admitted killing Angela Clayton, 74, at their home in Newham, east London. The incident took place as Clayton strangled the woman on February 17, before calling 999 to report himself to the police. Officers arrived on scene at 12.48pm alongside the London Ambulance Service. The victim was found in her bedroom and was pronounced dead at the scene. Clayton was taken to custody and either answered no comment or remained silent and pretended to be asleep during interviews. He was charged with murder the following day. Appearing at the Old Bailey in central London today, Clayton admitted the murder. Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke, from Scotland Yard, said: "Our thoughts are with Angela’s family and friends, who have lost a much-loved mother, grandmother and friend. While no outcome can undo their loss, we hope today’s conviction brings them some measure of closure. "Our commitment to tackling violence against women and girls remains firm." In a statement, Ms Clayton’s family said: “Everything we have done over the last six months has been entirely for our mum, Angela, to ensure she received the justice she completely deserved." Clayton will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, September 22.
