San Francisco residents confused over new homeless encampment that turned out to be a movie set One resident said that a ‘trained eye’ allowed him to spot that the encampment was a film set - Bookmark - CommentsGo to comments San Francisco residents were left confused after a sprawling homeless encampment suddenly appeared in the heart of the Financial District. However, any fears of a new homeless area were quickly resolved. While the encampment was reported to Solve SF, a mobile app designed to report city issues, the site turned out to just be part of a film set for a star-studded Netflix movie. “I was walking around, and there's (sic) a million tents everywhere, which seems more than normal for this area,” Andrew Eljumaily, a resident of the city, told ABC7 of the tents lining California and Battery streets that appeared on Friday. Footage of the tents recorded by the outlet showed the encampment stretching along the sidewalk, with some of the installations being covered with tarpaulin and banners. At one point, a rusted barrel could be seen near an overturned umbrella. However, some residents said that the encampment looked too meticulously put together to have appeared on its own. “To the trained eye, somehow they don’t look like regular homeless encampments,” Bryan Talmage, a former resident who had returned to the city for a wedding, told SFGATE. “A burn barrel? That was my first clue. Come on, this is like the movies.” Bei Liu, a passerby, told CBS News that the site looked real to him but that he began noticing the difference between the film set and a real homeless encampment. Initially, he thought that an encampment at Tenderloin had been moved to the Financial District. The encampment was created for an upcoming Netflix movie under the working title “2034,” the project’s publicity team confirmed to SFGATE. The film is set to be directed by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was spotted by the publication at the site. Although many details about the film have yet to be made public, the movie stars Hollywood legends including Rachel McAdams, Toni Collette and Jeff Daniels. The publicist team also confirmed that they were set to film in San Francisco for three days. Manijeh Fata, the executive director of the San Francisco film, told CBS News that the teams behind big-budget productions were increasingly choosing the city when filming their movies. One draw is a $1 million cash rebate approved by the city’s Board of Supervisors earlier this year. “That has helped create a lot of excitement and buzz for bringing more productions back to San Francisco," Fata said. “So productions that are set here can actually film here.” Production companies filming on location can generate as much as $625,000 a day, according to Motion Picture Association figures seen by the network. “It's great for our city, great for our local crews, our local businesses and our hotels,” Fata said. “So we want to see that happening here.” Join our commenting forum Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies Comments [Image text:] NOPARKING 26 STREET CLLANINSY Pay by License
