A British man fatally shot by a Vietnam veteran was a member of a "traveller conman fraud group", it's been claimed.
Salis Hanrahan, 20, was shot inside the Philadelphia home of George Barr, 75, last Wednesday. Hanrahan, who had an Irish traveller background, was from Essex and had been working on Barr's home when he was shot dead.
Officers said Hanrahan managed to escape the home after he was shot in the chest but collapsed on the pavement. He died of his injuries not long afterward.
Hanrahan was believed to be working in the US illegally and was said to be a member of a group described as "The Traveling Conman Fraud Group". It is not clear when he entered the US.
The FBI has designated the group as a criminal gang and is made up of British and Irish scammers who overcharge people for building work that they never finish. Investigators have not shared further information about how Hanrahan was linked to organised crime or if Barr had been targeted.
His wife Roseann shared an image of them both on social media, adding: "My beautiful husband I love you so much." He leaves behind his wife and a daughter.
Police said contractors were outside the home shortly after 2pm, when Barr fired shots inside the home.
"They heard arguments or some kind of commotion inside and then they found the boss outside," Philadelphia police captain James Kimrey told a press conference. Barr's neighbour Erin Kelly told NBC Philadelphia: "He's always friendly. Every time I've encountered him.
"It's just crazy that it happened here. It's always quiet here, so for something to happen like this, it just shocked us all." Other neighbours said Barr was a retired firefighter, a Vietnam veteran and ran an unofficial neighbourhood watch.
He was later charged with murder, possession of an instrument of crime and recklessly endangering another person. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security told MailOnline: "Salis Hanrahan was an illegal alien from the United Kingdom.
"He entered the country illegally on an unknown date and location and was denied Electronic System for Travel Authorization as he was determined to have affiliation with “The Traveling Conman Fraud Group,” a transnational criminal organization. ICE and CBP have never encountered this individual."
