Armed police rushed to the incident outside a Netto supermarket in the Friedrichstadt district of Dresden at around 8.20am today, according to local media. A 41-year-old man was reportedly wielding 'a kind of musket in his hand' and shouted a religious phrase before he was shot in an exchange of fire with police. According to reports, the suspect opened fire on the officers with a firearm during the arrest and several police officers then used their guns on the man. No police officers or other civilians were injured in the incident. The suspect was wounded by return fire from police officers and was taken to hospital. He is currently under investigation on charges of making threats and violating firearms legislation. Images from the scene outside the supermarket showed specialist police officers with masks and guns surrounding the entrance, while a man was lying in the back of an ambulance. It was specifically said by police that the man had a "kind of musket in his hand" rather than a typical gun "which he then fired at the officers", said police, reported Bild. Witnesses also reportedly said that the man had used the Islamic phrase 'Allahu Akbar' and then screamed in pain as he was shot, while a pool of blood could be seen on the ground afterwards.
