Citigroup’s credit traders and analysts are recommending their hedge fund clients short bonds issued by French shipping giant CMA CGM Group, according to people familiar with the matter.
The US bank has singled out the bonds, arguing that the price of the group’s debt should fall as more shipping capacity comes online later this year and freight prices fall in response, the people said. The price of CMA’s bonds has rallied this year as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the uncertainty of when the war in Iran will end has sent shipping rates soaring.
