An 11-year-old girl has tragically died after her hair was caught in the suction pipe of a swimming pool while on holiday in Italy.
The youngster, from Milan, was staying at a beach resort on the Descalzo promenade in Sestri Levante, Lombardy, when the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon. She was taken unconscious to a hospital in Genoa and has now died.
She had gone into a small inside pool with shallow water, as it was cooler than the extreme temperatures outside on the beach, and then her hair became trapped in a suction nozzle - with the force sufficient to drag her underwater.
People by the pool tried to pull her but were unable to do so as all her hair had become trapped. When paramedics arrived minutes later she was removed, but there was no response when CPR was given.
An air ambulance took the girl to Gaslini Children's Hospital in Genoa, where she was taken to an intensive care unit, but has now tragically died without regaining consciousness.
Police have started an investigation, having taken statements from those present who tried to free the girl. Police are also examining the pool to understand how her hair became trapped, reports Sky TG24.
An initial report from police will then be delivered to the prosecutor's office, with a decision made on whether there has been any criminality. The mother, who remained at the Gaslini hospital with her daughter, will also be questioned in the coming days over what happened.
It is the latest in worrying list of tragedies that have happened at swimming pools when people, often children, have become trapped in suction pipes in Italy and other countries.
Italy's Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policies, Nello Musumeci, has now co-signed a bill with Health Minister Orazio Schillaci which will ensure stricter measures are put in place at pools.
He said: "In the last three months, five minors have died in swimming pools. Strict discipline is needed, but also greater caution is needed in never leaving children alone in the water.
"The Meloni government's bill, aimed at this goal, will be approved by the relevant committee within the month, and we will do everything possible to schedule it urgently."
