A doctor has warned of five symptoms many women “might not know about”. According to the expert, these can hit during the menopause but aren’t widely talked about.
Menopause is a natural life stage that typically affects women between the ages of 45 and 55. It happens when oestrogen levels in the body drop to a point where periods cease completely.
As a consequence of these hormonal shifts, the body can experience a broad range of symptoms that can impact both physical and mental health. Most people are aware of some of the more familiar effects, including hot flushes, mood swings, and brain fog.
However, there are some lesser-known side effects you may not have heard of. In a video uploaded to his Instagram page, Doctor Amir Khan explained more.
He said: “Hey guys, I want to talk about five things falling oestrogen levels around the menopause effects that you might not know about.”
Gum inflammation and dry mouth
He said: “Number one, your gums and teeth. Falling oestrogen can cause gum inflammation and dry mouth, increasing the risk of gum disease and tooth loss. Some women even notice their teeth feeling more sensitive or loose.”
A change in hearing
He said: “Number two, your hearing. Oestrogen actually helps protect the delicate hair cells in the inner ear.
“So when levels drop, hearing can become less sharp, especially for higher-pitched sounds.”
Coordination and balance
“Now lower oestrogen affects the inner ear and muscle strength, both key to balance,” he continued. “One reason falls become more common after the menopause.”
Reaction to caffeine
Dr Amir said: “With less oestrogen, your liver breaks down caffeine more slowly, so that afternoon coffee can suddenly keep you awake all night.”
How your skin heals
He added: “Your skin's ability to heal. Oestrogen helps maintain collagen and blood flow to the skin.
“As it drops, cuts and bruises can take longer to heal and skin becomes thinner and more fragile. Knowledge is power, so now you know these things, it might help explain some of your symptoms.”
The NHS lists some of the most common symptoms of menopause as:
- Changes to your periods
- Hot flushes and night sweats
- Sleep problems
- Mood changes, poor memory and brain fog
- Weigh gain
- Vaginal problems
- UTIs
If you think you have symptoms of menopause or perimenopause you should speak to your GP.
