Lewis breaks Australian 100m record, beats five-time Olympic champ

Torrie Lewis has set a new Australian women's 100m record of 11.04 seconds, beating her own previous national record of 11.08. Lewis ran a time of 11.04 seconds, beating her previous record time of 11.08 as she beat out Jamaica's five-time Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah, who finished in second. The 21-year-old Lewis also competed in and won the 200m event where she ran a 22.66. It is the third separate time Lewis has broken the Australian 100m record, having previously done so as a 19-year-old in 2024 by running an 11.10 before lowering that mark to 11.08 at last year's World Championships. Lewis made her Olympic debut in the 200m event in Paris two years ago and finished in the semifinals after running a then-personal best time of 22.89. She also competed in the 4x100m event in Paris. The women's 100m record is owned by late American sprint legend Florence Griffith-Joyner, who ran a 10.49 at the US Olympic trials in 1988. Thompson-Herah holds the second-fastest 100m mark of all-time at 10.54. Griffith-Joyner also holds the world record for the 200m, 21.34, a mark she set at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Both records are among the longest-standing across all women's athletics. The career-best 100m time comes at the perfect time for Lewis, who is poised to compete in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
