Modi Has Few Good Options to Quell India’s ‘Cockroach’ Protests What started as a satirical online movement two months ago has turned into one of India’s biggest student protests in years, sparking scenes of violent clashes in New Delhi. And Prime Minister Narendra Modi has few good options to stop them. Launched in May by young organizers with little political experience, the Cockroach Janta Party managed to draw crowds of students, parents and professionals into the heart of India’s capital, where they jumped police barricades and faced tear gas and baton charges in an attempt to march to the parliament on Monday. They started by demanding the resignation of India’s education minister after a series of exam scandals, but frustrations quickly morphed into broader anger at Modi’s government.
