A 23-year-old woman has tragically died in Japan after a man plunged onto her from a 12-storey block of flats. He survived the fall.
Emergency services were called to a report that "a man fell and hit a woman" in Naka-ku, Nagoya City at around 1am on July 19.
Police named the victim as Tomohiro Inaba, who was a shop assistant working nearby. She was taken to the hospital where she was sadly pronounced dead several hours later from haemorrhagic shock.
It is understood she had been walking on a path under the window where Nobushige Taguchi, 29, also a shop worker, fell and landed on top of her. He survived the fall but is fighting for his life in hospital having sustained severe head and chest injuries, and is in a coma.
The incident took place around 500m northeast of Yabamachi Station on the Nagoya Municipal Subway Meijo Line, in an area densely populated with high-rise buildings and apartments, reports Kyodo News.
The person who alerted police was a friend of the victim who was walking alongside her but suffered no injuries. Other people also rushed to the scene in the early hours of the morning after hearing screams.
An investigation is now underway into how the man came to fall and police are looking into whether he jumped or if it is an accident.
The area was cordoned off following the incident with forensic officers gathering evidence from the scene, although it is unclear from which floor of the apartment block the man fell.
Local media reports the man was not a resident living in the block of flats and so part of the investigation will also look into why he was there.
It comes after a woman was killed after a pensioner jumped from a fourth-floor apartment in Milan last September - he also survived the fall.
Francesca Manno, 83, died after walking under the balcony of the building in the Baggio district of the city when she was hit by a 70-year-old man who fell directly on top of her.
The man had climbed over his balcony railing in the building where both he and Ms Manno lived, according to Corriere Milano.
Police initially believed it had been a double suicide attempt but then an investigation found that the two were strangers and Ms Manno's death had been a tragic accident.
