Flight FR5090 took off from the city in southern Spain just after 6am local time (7am BST) today. The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, which can carry up to 210 passengers, issued a 7700 squawk code before landing at Edinburgh Airport. According to air traffic monitoring platform Flight Radar, the onboard emergency was declared about 30 minutes before landing, at around 7.36am. The plane then landed just after 8am and was met by emergency services in line with standard procedures. The 7700 squawk code is declared by pilots when an aircraft experiences an in-flight emergency that requires immediate priority handling and assistance from air traffic controllers. Such emergencies include mechanical failures, onboard safety threats, medical emergencies or unclear or escalating situations. The code acts as a silent "Mayday" which prompts air traffic control to clear airspace and alert emergency services on the ground. The aircraft is then guided to the nearest suitable runway. Ryanair has now confirmed the emergency was declared due to a "minor technical issue". A spokesperson told the Mirror: "This flight from Malaga to Edinburgh (22 Jul) experienced a minor technical issue before landing normally at Edinburgh Airport. "Passengers disembarked normally and the aircraft was subsequently inspected by our engineers in accordance with established procedures."
