Police have released an image of a man they wish to speak to after a man was injured in a serious alleged assault in London following England’s World Cup game against Norway.
The Met said a 24-year-old man was involved in an altercation with a group of men on Gascoyne Road, Hackney in the early hours of July 12 after watching the match.
One man in the group assaulted the victim, who remains in hospital, the Metropolitan Police said.
The victim sustained serious head injuries as a result, and was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service where he remains. His injuries are deemed not life-threatening.
No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing, but the force is asking the public to get in touch to identify the man in their image as they believe he has important information about the incident.
Detective Sergeant Steve Rafferty, who is leading the investigation, said: “Since launching our investigation, officers have carried out extensive enquiries, including analysing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.
“The assault took place after the England vs. Norway World Cup match, and we know that the area was extremely busy at the time. As a result, there may be additional witnesses who can provide crucial information.
“We are releasing an image of a man who we believe may have important information which could assist our investigation, and I urge anyone who recognises him to get in touch with police. He’s described as a white man, believed to be in his 20s or 30s, with light brown hair. He was wearing a blue and white England shirt with a navy collar.”
The force is asking anyone in the Gascoyne Road area during the early hours of Sunday to contact them on 101, quoting reference CAD 600/12JUL or by reporting anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
