Some high-profile Chinese funds heavily invested in consumer names are pivoting to AI stocks, a bet that may boost returns but also leaves them more vulnerable to the sector’s volatility.
The E Fund Blue Chip Selected Mixed Fund, one of China’s largest actively managed portfolios, cut its long-held positions in liquor makers — Kweichow Moutai Co., Wuliangye Yibin Co. and Luzhou Laojiao Co. — to a combined 13% in the second quarter from 30% at end-March. The fund added prominent artificial intelligence names, such as Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. and printed circuit maker Suzhou Dongshan Precision Manufacturing Co., according to its latest filing.
