Donald Trump declares he 'would like to be next President' in threat to US Constitution Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested that he would like to run a third term, despite the Constitution not allowing him to do so. Donald Trump has declared he would "like to be the next president" in a brazen comment made during a media call with reporters at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Washington. "All know is, I'd like to be the next president," Trump said, in the jaw-dropping moment. "I'm going to make somebody look very good. They're going to sit there and [all of] this stuff is going to be opening, and they're going to be saying what a genius they are." As per the US Constitution, a president cannot be elected beyond two four-year terms. This restriction was established by the 22nd Amendment, which was ratified in 1951 following Franklin D. Roosevelt's election to four consecutive terms. The amendment officially enshrined in law a two-term tradition that had been followed since George Washington stepped down after his second term. While some may pass the US President's comments off as a joke, in context, he was gloating about "all of these building plans [and] factories opening up" and how that will make the next person in the Oval Office "look very good" - it is not the first time Trump has mentioned going for a third term in office. In 2025, he told NBC News that there were methods for doing so, doubling down on how serious he was, adding that he was “not joking". “A lot of people want me to do it,” Trump said in the 2025 interview, referring to his allies. “But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration.” While in the same interview, he said he was "focused on the current", but, when asked whether he wanted another term, he replied: “I like working.” “I’m not joking,” Trump said, when asked to clarify. “But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.” When asked whether he has been presented with plans to allow him to seek a third term, Trump said, “There are methods which you could do it.”
