Bill Oddie, famed British comedian with The Goodies and wildlife broadcaster, dies aged 85

Oddie shot to fame in the 1970s as one of the British comedy trio The Goodies, and is fondly remembered for presenting several wildlife TV programmes. British comedian, writer, musician, broadcaster and wildlife conservationist Bill Oddie has died aged 85. Oddie’s agent, David Foster, has paid tribute to the “intelligence and wit” of “Britain’s “best-loved birder”. He said in a statement: “Bill was a multi-talented celebrity – wildlife presenter, broadcaster, comedian, writer, songwriter, musician and conservationist. Yet it was never fame that he valued. Instead he encouraged us to respect and protect the environment." Foster added: "He taught us the wonder of it. He protested, lobbied and campaigned for it. He led the way and people of all ages and backgrounds responded to his call. And such a massive contribution to conservation will never be forgotten." “As Bill’s agent I witnessed close hand his intelligence and wit. He was my friend and it was an honour and a privilege to represent him for so many years. I will miss him terribly. My thoughts and love are with Bill’s wife, Laura, and his daughters Bonnie, Kate and Rosie, who have asked not to be contacted at this sad time. Please respect their wishes." Born in 1941 in Rochdale in Lancashire, Oddie came to prominence as a member of the comedy trio The Goodies, alongside Cambridge University Footlights members Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden. Their eponymous TV comedy show ran from 1970 until 1982. Following the show, Oddie, a naturalist, conservationist and avid bird-watcher, established himself as a presenter of wildlife programmes for the BBC, including Birding With Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie Goes Wild, Springwatch and Autumnwatch. He was open about his mental health issues, and shared that he had been diagnosed with clinical depression in 2001. Oddie is survived by his wife, Laura, and three daughters – Rosie, from his marriage to Laura, and Kate and Bonnie from his first marriage to the jazz musician Jean Hart.
