Global funds entered short positions in Hong Kong tech stocks earlier this year to raise funds to invest in South Korea’s chip giants, but the latest correlation numbers show those trades look to be rapidly unwinding.
South Korea’s Kospi Index is once again negatively correlated with the Hang Seng Tech Index on a rolling 20-day basis, meaning that gains or losses in one gauge correspond with opposite moves in the other. That pattern suggests investors are selling the Korean gauge, with its heavy weighting of chipmakers Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Hynix Inc., and covering their short positions in Hong Kong-listed tech firms such as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd.
