Major EU airport to close for 11 weeks for £42.8m upgrade - all flights impacted Several airlines operate flights to and from the busy airport and about two million passengers are expected to be impacted by the 11-week closure in 2028 All flights at a busy European airport will be affected as the airport is set to close for months in 2028. Charleroi Airport in Brussels - Belgium's second largest airport - will close for an 11-weeks period in 2028 as its runway is renovated and the airport is revamped. About two million travellers are expected to be impacted. All flights will be impacted between August 15 and October 31, 2028. This will include passengers travelling during both the school summer holidays and October half-term break. The airport will undergo several changes during the closure, which is expected cost around €50million (£42.8million). Works include completely resurfacing the 3,200 metre runway. Several carriers operate flights to and from the airport, including airlines Ryanair and Wizz Air. Airlines will be forced to temporarily reroute their flights to different airports. At present, there is no further information of what this will look like. It is, however, likely to mean flights are either cancelled or diverted. "A complete refurbishment of Charleroi airport's sole runway, together with other major infrastructure modernisation works, has been scheduled by SOWAER (the company behind the works) for the second half of 2028," the airport stated, according to several reports.
