British man run over in horror Thailand crash makes 'special' recovery signs after fighting for life Tourist Ethan Lacey, 20, was recovering in a Thai hospital for about a month before his family raised enough money to bring him back to Britain for further treatment A Brit left with a catastrophic brain injury after being run over in Thailand is now starting to show "special" signs of recovery following his return to the UK. Ethan Lacey, 20, was left fighting for his life in a critical condition after he fell from a moving pickup truck in Pattaya, back in May. He spent more than a month in a Thai hospital before his family raised enough cash to bring him back to Britain and continue his treatment at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Mum Kerry, 41, said Ethan's future still remains unclear and he faced a long road ahead having suffered a variety of antibiotic-resistant infections and fluid on his brain. But within the last week her son has started to show "really special" signs of recovery - by responding to a painting his daughter made and nodding in response to questions from nurses. Kerry, from Castle Vale, Birmingham, said: "It was really special to see him showing signs like that as we haven't seen those since we came back to the UK. But we're getting positive steps and setbacks at the same time so he still faces a difficult road ahead. "He still might not recover, or could make a partial recovery and even a full recovery, we are just taking every day step-by-step and taking each positive we can when it happens. In the meantime we are here by his bedside 11am-8pm every single day and we're just taking each day as it comes. At least we have him back here as the care in Thailand was Third World." Posting on social media, Ethan's dad Kevin, added: "Today was Mum’s day with Ethan, and she witnessed something really special. The nurse checked Ethan’s temperature, which was 36.4°C, and then asked him, 'Would you like the blanket on you?' "Ethan nodded his head. The nurse asked him again, and once again he nodded. To us, that’s a massive step forward. "He didn’t do it again during the day, but when I arrived tonight and mentioned it to the night staff, they told me he’d also done it for them during the night. That’s amazing and gives us even more hope. "He's also been looking at a painting his daughter did for him and, at times, he seemed much more responsive with his eyes. He's still drifting in and out of sleep, but that's completely understandable considering the amount of medication he's on, as well as the severity of his brain injury. "He's moved his leg and hands more than he has in a while, which is another encouraging sign. When he's given his eye drops, he's jumping and reacting much more than before. I believe that's another really positive step." Kevin added: "The other positive is that he is breathing on his own. That is very unusual for someone with brain injuries as bad as Ethan's. Most patients with this type of brain injury need a tracheostomy. "However, we thought we'd lost him again the other day as there is a lot of fluid around his brain so while we are seeing some positives, there continues to be obstacles he needs to overcome. "The bug he has now become resistant to the antibiotics that had previously been working. After undergoing more surgery he has now placed a new external ventricular drain on the left side of his head and is on three lots of different antibiotics as they continue to try and fight the infections." Kerry told previously how she only found out her son was in hospital when a friend he had made on his travels sent her a photo of him lying in a hospital bed in intensive care. She had not heard from her son for two days and a friend out there had reported him to police as a missing person, before Ethan's dad Kevin received the harrowing image on Facebook Messenger. They said Ethan came out of the vehicle's window with his head hitting the ground "full force” before the rear tyre drove over his head and shoulder. Kerry and Kevin immediately booked a flight and have been at his bedside ever since - both in Thailand and since being moved to Birmingham.
