Czech Arms Tycoon Expands Holdings With Pirelli Stake Purchase
Czech billionaire Michal Strnad became one of eastern Europe’s wealthiest individuals thanks to the blockbuster listing of his defense company earlier this year. Now, the 33-year-old arms tycoon is putting some of those proceeds to work by taking a 14% stake in Pirelli SpA, one of Italy’s corporate crown jewels.
The transaction, which is valued at just under €1 billion ($1.15 billion), relieves some pressure on Pirelli, which has come under political scrutiny for having a China-linked company as its major shareholder. It also reflects Strnad’s ambition to build out a private investment empire in Europe and the US.
