The plane crashed into a field on Saturday just outside the city of Nazca killing 13 people, local authorities said. In a statement on Facebook, Nazca's municipal government said the plane was taking tourists on a sightseeing flight of the Nazca Lines, a group of extensive geoglyphs scraped into the desert around Nazca hundreds of years ago by Peru's Indigenous inhabitants. The lines form images of animals that can only be fully appreciated from planes or viewing towers. Nazca's government said the plane departed from the nearby city of Ica and was operated by Peru vian company Aerodiana. On its website the airline says that it has offered scenic flights over the Nazca lines for the past 14 years, using Cessna Grand Caravan planes. In a statement, Peru 's Ministry for Trade and Tourism said that 11 “foreign tourists” and two crew members were on the plane that crashed Saturday. State news agency Agencia Andina reported that two German, two Spanish and seven Italian tourists were on the plane. Peru vian authorities said the accident is under investigation. Municipalidad Provincial de Nasca wrote in a statement on Facebook: "The Provincial Municipality of Nasca expresses its deep sorrow for the accident involving the aircraft of Aerodiana and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. "The official information contradicted with the DGAC, the aircraft was based in the city of Pisco and took off from its airport to carry out a tourist flight over the Lines and Geoglifos of Nasca. The Provincial Municipality of Nasca provided the corresponding support since the emergency was reported." In a statement posted in Spanish on their Facebook page a spokesperson for Aerodiana said: "AERODIANA expresses its deepest sorrow for the tragic accident that occurred today during a tourist overflight operation in the Nazca Lines area. "In this moment of immense grief, we extend our most sincere condolences and solidarity to the families and loved ones of the deceased. We share in their grief with respect and are fully prepared to provide any necessary support."From the outset, we have been cooperating with the competent authorities and providing all the information necessary for the development of the corresponding investigations."Throughout our 18 years of operation, we have maintained a constant commitment to the safety of our passengers and crews. Therefore, this event deeply affects us and reaffirms our willingness to cooperate fully and responsibly in everything required by the authorities."We also inform you that the company will evaluate its flight schedule in accordance with the provisions of the competent authorities. We appreciate the understanding of our passengers, partners, and community during this difficult time." None of the victims have been formerly identified yet.
